Root & Rise Fund – Awaken

Root & Rise Fund

Root & Rise Fund

Please be sure to read thoroughly before you apply.

The Root & Rise fund was established to tend to folks who face barriers to accessing quality herbs, due to systemic injustice, and for whom paying for a CSA share would be a hardship (and for whom the sliding scale options don’t provide sufficient support). We want to work toward equity and reparations, and get these lovingly-grown herbs into as many hands as possible! We wish to tend to our community so that you can tend to yourselves, your families, and your local communities – to root and rise – with these healing herbs.

Who is the fund for?

As we are growing on Treaty 1 territory, priority is given to Indigenous applicants, who will receive 100% funding of CSA shares. All others will receive scholarships that cover 75% of a CSA share. We will also consider anyone for whom a CSA share would be a hardship (for whom the sliding scale options don’t provide sufficient support) whose work centres on herbal healing and community care (for example free herbal clinics or free herbal goods for underserved groups facing systemic inequity.

Available to Manitoba residents. Pick up in Winnipeg (we can arrange for delivery within Wpg for those with transportation barriers).

Before applying…

Before you apply, please take some time to consider how applicable the fund is to you.

We also offer a sliding scale – please read over the sliding scale info to determine if one of the options there is a better fit for you. The scholarship is truly for our most underserved community members and an act of reconciliation. So, if you have access to savings or family support, or if the sliding scale would be enough of a support to mitigate the hardship of the cost of a CSA share, please use those options instead of applying for a scholarship, so that others who don’t have those options can access the fund. Thank you!

Selection process:

Selection of recipients will be based on the personal story submissions, read without knowledge of the applicant’s details. Since this is an honour system, and we also can’t begin to rank priority of need (finances and life situations are so very nuanced), this is the most community-minded and personal approach we could come up with.

Our generous donors:

We truly couldn’t get these herbs into your homes without the support of our generous donors! In fact, the fund was sparked by the heart of our very first donor who reached out and said she wanted to help get these lovingly grown herbs into as many hands as possible and would love to see them go to Indigenous community members.

A huge THANK YOU to our 2022 Root & Rise fund supporters:

  • Demetra Penner & Colin Vandenberg of Sweet Spirit Apothecary

If you would like to donate to the fund, reach out and we can talk it over!
